Many patients experience a certain level of anxiety about visiting the dentist. In the event that this anxiety becomes a barrier to treatment, there are a number of vital skills a dentist should possess to ensure the patient receives the treatment they need.
The UCL Eastman Dental Institute offers GDPs a Certificate in Conscious Sedation and Pain Management, a qualification that will help improve sedation skills for both experienced clinicians and relative newcomers.
Successful completion of the year-long part-time course will see practitioners undertake: Lectures and seminars, problem-based learning, ongoing clinical assessments, oral and written exams, a 3,000 word dissertation.
Encompassing areas such as pharmacology, psychology and physiology, the course gives GDPs a comprehensive theoretical understanding of pain and anxiety relief, as well as the practical skills to integrate them into patient care.
