Orthodontic trainee wins two prestigious awards

Ioannis Levisianos, a third year student in Orthodontics at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute has been awarded the celebrated J K Williams Medal of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Ioannis is also Specialist Registrar at the Eastman Dental Hospital, The award is made annually to the candidate who secures the highest marks in the BiCollegiate Membership in Orthodontics examination. This is the second consecutive year that the medal has been awarded to an Eastman candidate, with Ioannis becoming the 9th award winner to be trained at the Eastman.

Ioannis has also received the extremely competitive Houston Research Poster Prize at the 87th European Orthodontic Society Congress in Istanbul, June 2011. The award is for the best research poster of unpublished research on a topic of orthodontic interest at the annual Congress.

The winning poster presented research that Ioannis carried out for his MSc dissertation, which was titled ‘In vivo investigations of an engineered skeletal muscle tissue analogue for use in the management of craniofacial abnormalities’. The authors of the poster were Levisianos I, Mudera V, Lewis MP, Hunt NP and Shah R. Ioannis was presented with an inscribed certificate and a prize of £1,000.
