Bruxism Awareness Week – support Help for Heroes

S4S, a specialist dental splints laboratory, is delighted to announce that the first Bruxism Awareness Week will be launched from the 25th-31st October 2010, in support of Help for Heroes.

Bruxism Awareness Week is backed by clinicians nationwide and will focus attention on the condition and where to seek help.Bruxism is the action of teeth grinding/clenching resulting from muscle hyperactivity. It affects up to 50% of the population and can be compounded by stress.

Consequences of bruxism include:

Disorders of the jaw – including TMD
    Tooth wear, damage or breakage
    Headaches/Migraines
    Poor sleep quality
    Tinitis
    Ear ache

Bruxism Awareness Week seeks to involve dental practices already offering bruxism treatment, and encourage others to follow suit. The Week will be supported by a practice information/promotion pack that is free to all UK practices.

Statistics indicate that staggering one in two staff members of the armed forces serving in the second Gulf War suffered from PTSD, a symptom of which is bruxism.

Free training will be offered to military dentists to assist their treatment, and for each bruxism splint provided by S4S until the end of the year, a £1.00 donation will be made to Help for Heroes.

A recent facebook group was set up for people suffering from bruxism, and currently has just over 100 members.
