The theme for the British Dental Association's 2008 conference programme was 'Strategies for success: you and your team'. This year’s exhibition promised to be the biggest yet, with more stands than ever filling the entire Central Hall at Manchester Central Convention Complex, formerly known as the GMex. The last BDA Conference held at Manchester was five years ago - both the city and the BDA itself have seen many changes in that time, as has the dental profession, as reflected by Susie Sanderson in her Conference speech. As always, we were there to report and to bring you our increasingly popular photographic view of the event.

Friday 25th April saw the 10th Anniversary event of the Dental Awards, the longest running awards programme in dentistry in the United Kingdom. Dental Awards 2008 - Winners Announced

The winners of the 10th annual Dental Awards were announced on April 25 during a gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London sponsored by The Probe, Smile, the British Dental Health Foundation, Denplan, The DentalWeb, Software of Excellence, Sunstar and Wrigley. Media partners included the British Dental Journal and Dental Tribune.

British Dental Association Urges Reconsideration of NHS Commitment Criteria

This year’s BDTA Dental Showcase will take place at ExCeL London from October 2-4. Providing a complete dental experience for all members of the dental team, with complimentary daily seminars on all core CPD topics, on display will be the latest in surgery and laboratory equipment, consumables and technology. From handpieces and operating chairs, furniture, units and cabinetry, to orthodontic and cross infection control products, visitors can see and hear about them all under one roof at the exhibition. BSSPD Schottlander Poster Prize

Paul Hyde of the Leeds Dental Institute has won this year’s Schottlander Poster Prize, which was presented at the British Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry (BSSPD) Conference in Exeter in March. His poster, entitled “Pressure within impression; the effect of speed of approximation”, shed insight on the effect that speed of impression seating has on the pressure built up within the material.

NHS Dentists Gnashing Teeth at Further Pay Cut

The leaders of the UK’s general dental practitioners described as ‘derisory’ the 2.2 per cent increase in earnings awarded by the government following today’s recommendation of the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Pay.
